Alleged gold dealer expected to apply for bail

2018-04-25 06:01

Four of five suspected gold dealers arrested earlier this month in possession of unwrought gold of R10 million are out on bail, while one accomplice remains behind bars.

Those granted bail are Daniel Mathews (57), April Job (40), Ishmael Lebone (31) and Innocent Moletsane (28). The fifth accused, Mosebi Ramohomane (51), remains in custody.

Capt. S’fiso Nyakane, provincial spokesperson of the Hawks, said Ramohomane’s bail application had been turned down because of allegations that he had threatened the investigating officer.

Nyakane said Ramohomane was due to re-apply for bail on his next appearance, today (25/04).

He will reappear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court.

Nyakane said the other four suspects had been granted bail of R1 500 each on their appearance in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court. He said all five men faced charges of possession and dealing in unrefined gold.

The men had been nabbed earlier this month during an intelligence-driven joint operation by the Hawks’ serious organised crime investigation unit, the Welkom K9 Unit, the flying squad and Harmony Mine Security.

“Information was received about the syndicate allegedly selling unwrought gold for R10 million.

“An entrapment operation was conducted, and four suspects were arrested upon receiving cash from an undercover police agent at a guest house in Welkom,” said Nyakane.

He said preliminary investigation had led them to the Tshepong Mine in Welkom, where the fifth suspect was arrested in possession of 604 gold-coloured nuggets.

“Two vehicles, as well as the gold nuggets have been seized, and the gold nuggets have been sent to the forensic laboratory for analysis.”
