Alleged rapist caught

THE long arm of the law has caught up with an alleged rape suspect after evading arrest for more than five years.

The 29-year-old men briefly appeared in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday (02/08) facing charges of allegedly raping three women in separate incidents in Bethlehem during 2010 and 2015.

He was not asked to plead and his hearing has been postponed to 18 August.

The suspect had been on the run since 2010 after the rape of a woman, who had been 21-years-old at the time.

The Bethlehem police continued searching for the suspect and busted him in the early morning of (31/07).

The breakthrough came after the use of forensic DNA as part of the investigation to solve the three rape cases.

Captain Zweli Mohobeleli, spokesperson of the Bethlehem police, said DNA results positively linked the suspect with the rape incidents of the three women.

He said the first case reportedly occured in September in 2010 and this involved a victim who was then 21 years old.

Mohobeleli said the victim was raped at an open field near the Brent Park residential settlement. The suspect reportedly confronted the victim, threatened her with a knife and thereafter repeatedly raped her at the crime scene.

The other two cases were in 2015 and involved victims, then 28 and 21, respectively.

These incidents reportedly happened in May and August in Bohlokong.

Mohobeleli said the 28-year-old woman was raped at her residence apparently after the victim’s alcoholic drink had been spiked.

He said the 28-year-old woman was in the company of friends at a house in Bohlokong where those present consumed beverages which included alcohol.

He said the victim suddenly felt unusually tired and went for a brief sleep in one of the rooms.

Mohobeleli said upon waking up, the woman discovered that she had been raped and reported the matter.

He said the third victim was walking alone when she met the suspect at about 04:00. The suspect reportedly offered to accompany her. “Upon reaching an open space near a surgery in Bohlokong, the suspect forced her to the ground and raped her, after which he fled,” said Mohobeleli.
