Alleged stabbers back in court

Two men charged with robbery and the murder of Thaba Nchu tavern owner Jacob Ngakantsi (48) are expected to reappear in the Thaba Nchu Magistrate’s Court on 16 January.

The suspects, Retshidisitswe Tolwana (27) and Thapelo Stuurman (31), appeared in court on Wednesday (04/01) and were not asked to enter a plea to charges against them.

They remained in custody while the police continued with further investigations into the business robbery and the murder of the victim two days into the new year.

Sgt. Martin Xuma, Thaba Nchu cluster police spokesperson, said the suspects were apprehended a day after the incident after the investigator found incriminating evidence linking them to the robbery and the murder.

“A knife with blood stains, presumed to have been used in a murder case, was found at the first suspect’s house. Some money was also found. Members interrogated the first suspect and he led them to the second suspect. Furthermore, one of the family members informed the police that he washed blood from the second suspect’s body,” said Xuma.

The suspects had reportedly stormed into Ngakantsi’s tavern in Ratlou, threatened him with a knife and thereafter took an undisclosed amount of money. Xuma said the two robbers allegedly stabbed the victim in the chest when a scuffle ensued over the money.

He said the two robbers took the loot and fled on foot afterwards. He said Ngakantsi died later at a local hospital where he was admitted.
