Five men arrested for the possession of illegal firearms and ammunition have been granted bail by the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court. They were released after their court appearance on Monday, 28 October, on bail of R2 000 each. The accused are Mahlomola Abram Motaung (42), Petrus Dikgang Mahlakoana (31), Mzimkhulu Simon Thabane (43), Lehlohonolo Frank Madona (32) and Tsoute Simon Matsobane (37). The men appeared in court after being found in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition in Zamdela on Sunday, 20 October. Brig. Motantsi Makhele, provincial police spokesperson, said the firearms confiscated included a black 9 mm pistol, a brown 9 mm pistol and six stun grenades. He said the armed men were arrested by the Zamdela Crime Prevention Unit after a wild pursuit. “Members were busy with crime prevention duties when they came across a suspicious looking white Toyota Tazz with a lot of occupants,” said Makhele. “When the police members tried to stop them, the driver of the vehicle sped away. The police gave chase and stopped the car. “The occupants of the vehicle failed to provide proper documentation for the firearms and were arrested.” The car was also confiscated.
