To Lindokuhle Mabandla (18), art is more than just a practice. Creation is in the blood of this visual artist, who is a Gr. 12 learner at the Tsoseletso High School in Bloemfontein.

Born and bred in the Free State capital, Lindokuhle says he plans to study visual arts at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, upon completing matric.

Creation is something that has been part of him from a young age.

“To me, art is life, it is everything and anything around us,” says Lindokuhle.

“Growing up, I used to draw characters from cartoon series such as Dragon Ball Z.

“I later started reading art books and I discovered new drawing techniques.”

Lindokuhle continued to show his love for drawing by challenging himself to produce complex and more realistic subjects such as landscapes, animals and portraits.

He says he was inspired by works of two world-renowned artists.

The first is Leonardo da Vinci, an Italian polymath whose areas of interest included invention, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, music and mathematics. The other artist of note inspiring him is Pablo Picasso, a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, stage designer, poet and playwright.

Lindokuhle says these artists’ creations and their work have influenced how he looks at art.

“I realised that art needs time, patience, creativity and discipline.”

Not only is he interested in drawing – he is also interested in fashion.

“I designed the Tsoseletso High School’s matric uniform for 2020.”

Lindokuhle is also a part-time model. He obtained second place at the Mr Valentines 2019 pageant at his school.

He has ambitions for the future.

“In five years, I see myself still doing portraits with much higher quality and more clients globally.

“I’m planning to start my own art project aimed at supporting fellow young artists and encouraging them to broaden the art space.

“I would also like to work on different social media platforms, because it is fast and it has been a breakthrough for many artists,” says Lindokuhle.
