THURSDAY (14/07) evening turned out to be a night of pampering, as close to 100 Kimberlites were serenaded at the launch of DeeKamo’s CD at the Lady Oppenheimer Hall in the McGreggor Museum.

The beautifully-dressed audience became first-time listeners to the collection of songs, aptly titled Versatility.

DeeKamo, whose real name is Keamogecwe Kekae, sang all ten songs on the album, to the approval of the audience.

Prior to the performance, brand manager Pule Tau had a few words to say about the project.

“This is part of an effort to encourage self-sustenance, to support the republic’s effort in reducing unemployment and to promote the diligence of music and the arts in general,” said Tau.

He added that the band had embarked on a robust marketing campaign to ensure the brand of DeeKamo was known and appreciated by the citizens of Galeshewe, Kimberley, neighbouring towns, the entire Northern Cape and, in the long run, nationally.

“DeeKamo is derived from the name Kamo, which is a shortened version of Keamogecwe. The ‘Dee’ is slang for the word ‘thee’, which means ‘one and only’. Hence the name DeeKamo, which loosely means ‘the one and only Kamo’. ”

According to Tau, DeeKamo is a qualified artist (vocalist) who studied music and graduated from the internationally-acclaimed Ochrim School of Music. She obtained a National Diploma in Music, majoring in Voice.

DeeKamo spent the past eight months in studio recording her debut album.

The album encapsulates different genres, including Afro Soul, R&B and Jazzy House. It showcases DeeKamo as a versatile artist that can perform different genres and cater for a diverse group of music lovers.

The album was inspired by love and seeks to bring unity and the spirit of Ubuntu among people.

It voices loyalty among lovers, appreciation of loved ones and seeks to inspire the youth and people in general to reach their goals in life.

DeeKamo mentioned how appreciative she was of the love and support she had received from Kimberley citizens and her broader national fan base.

DeeKamo is set to tour throughout the province with her album in August and the band plans to visit other provinces in late December.

According to Tau, there is also a big possibility of launching her video later this year, in October.

Phillip Speek of the Northern Cape Arts and Culture Council said the event was long overdue.

“We have been waiting for this, we are proud as an arts council to be part of this journey,” said Speek.

“As a council we have funded the launch and the production. We are presently trying to run similar programmes in all five districts of the province.”

Fahed Pindra from Togo, who now resides in Kimberley, says the event was beautiful and enjoyable.

Walter Moloi gave the launch full marks.

“And I hope it will be just like this to other artists in the province,” added Moloi.
