An opportunity is once more granted for arts and culture lovers to see their favourite artists live at the annual Gariep Arts Festival.

It is taking place at the Oppenheimer Gardens from 31 August to 3 September under the theme “Encore”.

  • The festival, in its 18th year, once more promises all types of fun and entertainment before it moves to new premises from next year. This year’s festival promises a special concert at the Northern Cape Theatre, with Juanita du Plessis, Theuns Jordaan and the So-weto String Quartet, with Tracey Lange as master of ceremonies.
  • It is an exciting opportunity to make use of the Northern Cape Theatre to host top-class productions. The Gariep exhibition at the William Humphreys Art Gallery will feature two exhibits: Hinterland by Willem Pretorius and Journeys in Linocut by Alfred Sekunkwe.) Among the additions to this year’s festival will be the FSG Events Wine Tent to ensure an entertaining day during which visitors can enjoy different delectable food offerings accompanied by a variety of wines, straight from the Cape Winelands.
  • Some of the wines are award-winning. The session will be accompanied by educational wine tutoring sessions. A short course on Entrepreneurship in the Arts, an NQF level 5 accredited course by Artéma and sponsored by the Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging (ATKV), will also be presented as part of the festival.

The course is designed for the artist who wants to make a living from his or her talent or art products (crafts) and gives basic skills to help the young artist entrepreneur to get started with a small enterprise.

Various entrants have already been selected for this opportunity.

By the end of the short course, the attendees are expected to have a good understanding of the context of the arts environment, what an entrepreneur is, basic business tools, financial management and budgeting, legal aspects of being an entrepreneur, labour relations in the arts, project and events management and the importance of marketing in the arts, among other things.

  • Entry tickets to the festival cost between R20 and R70 and are available at Compu-ticket, the offices of the Gariep Arts Festival in Du Toitspan Road and at the Garden Court.
