Free State road and track athlete Kesa Molotsane (26) is being acknowledged for her sterling form.

She has been announced as a finalist for the 2018 gsport Awards, an online initiative launched in August 2006 to recognise women excelling in various sporting codes in South Africa.

It also aims to raise the profile of women excelling in sport, and to encourage corporate entities to support female athletes.

Molotsane is a finalist for emerging athlete of the year.

The nomination of this student of the University of the Free State (UFS) followed her impressive performance, which includes winning some major races in 2017.

Molotsane won the title as 2017 Spar Grand Prix champion. She continued her winning streak, claiming the title in the 2018 Spar Women’s Challenge 10 km race in Port Elizabeth in May – making it two in a row. She finished in 33:46.

She also boasts the national student champion title in the 5 000 m and 10 000 m.

The track and road running queen was voted the best performer for South Africa after leading the charge for the national team at the 2018 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Championships in Chlef, Algeria.

This continental championship was held in March.

Other finalists in the same category are teen star in the high jump Zeney van der Walt, gold medal winner at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World u.20 Championships held in July; and swimming sensation Tatjana Schoenmaker, gold medal winner, setting a record time for Africa in the 200 m breaststroke at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia in April.

Winners will be announced at the 2018 gsport Awards ceremony on Friday (31/08) in Johannesburg.
