ON 8 July, Cindy van Zyl (educatio-nal therapist at the Beudene Day care Centre for the Disabled in Bloemfontein) will present a course on the basics of autism at 5 Ray Champion Drive in Rayton, Bloemfontein.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behaviou-ral challenges.

There is often nothing about how people with ASD look that sets them apart from others, but they may communicate, interact, behave and learn in ways that are different from most other people.

About one in 68 children have been identified as having ASD, according to estimates from the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) network.

Van Zyl and the Beudene Day Care Centre for the Disabled are offering a day-long workshop at which many questions about ASD will be answered. These include what autism is, how it can be identified, how the early identification of autism is done, what can be done and what not to do when one suspects a child has autism and where to find support.

For more information, call Van Zyl on 072-485-6551.

  • The Beudene Day Care Centre celebrates its 19th birthday this year.

It is a centre for children and adults. A staff of five help care for 50 to 75 people on a daily basis.

The disabilities range from slightly intellectually impaired to severe, as well as cerebral palsy, autism and multiple disabilities.

Loving, safe and stimulating care is provided for individuals and their families.
