Gaopalelwe Motebe, Azapo Northern Cape publicity secretary’s desk:

The South African Student Organisation (Saso) and the Black People’s Convention (BPC) morphed into the Azanian People’s Organisation (Azapo) 40 years ago, following their banning.

This was the period when there was no political activity, let alone any political organisation allowed in the country. A political vacuum was thus filled.

Its founding principle of Black Consciousness (BC) infused people, especially students, with such confidence that the Soweto uprising of 16 June came into being, with the subsequent outpouring of youth into exile.

In Azapo’s 40 years, there have been campaigns of liberation through education, the formation of the Azanian National Liberation Army (Azanla) and the keeping alive of BC and the Biko legacy to contribute to the leadership of the country.

The first minister of Science and Technology, Dr Mosibudi Mangena, and some of the current leadership, were part of the Black Consciousness Movement. Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Matthews Phosa, Barney Pityana and Terror Lekota were also all part of this movement..Leadership that has been through BC include

Azapo was so serious about land and economic ownership that it rejected the 1994 elections. We knew then, as we do now, that the 1994 elections was the selling out of what the struggle was all about.

We reflected on how useless freedom without land and economy is and recommitted to ending all economic exploitation of blacks and restoring their dignity by restoring land to the rightful owners.
