The Department of Water and Sanitation in the Free State urges the public to use water wisely, as the water crisis continued unabated.

The department has warned that water levels have decreased drastically in dams.

The three dams, Welbedacht, Rustfontein and Knellpoort, supplying water to the greater Mangaung Metro region, are reportedly hovering below 37% in the wake of poor rainfall.

Kido Thoabala, departmental spokesperson, also attributes the problems to municipalities’ inability to promptly attend to leakages and burst pipes.

She says water levels are lower than in 2016.

Residents are urged to report leaks to the Department of Water and Sanitation’s hotline on 0800-200-200.
