Gustav Wilson has received a feather in his cap in the form of the prestigious award of South African man of the year for 2016. The honour was bestowed on him at a function held on Friday, 18 November, in Johannesburg. Wilson was voted by the public as the deserving recipient from all shortlisted finalists in the category.

Wilson was found to possess qualities in the category he won. These are: standing boldly and proudly to spearhead initiatives that illustrate caring, being a role model, a success, a mentor, being innovative and embracing the spirit of ubuntu.

“It is my great honour and pleasure to have received the South African man of the year award. I thank each and everyone in the Department of Correctional Services, the community of Heidedal, Mangaung, Free State and across South Africa, who took the time to vote for me. This award is for more than me. It is for every boy child, young men in general in our beautiful country, whose dream is to unite to build a better tomorrow. It is for every offender, parolee, probationer and ex-offender who rehabilitated and deserves a second change,” said Wilson. “Thank you to all the women who support their sons, husbands and fathers to be great men.”

Wilson said he was unsure about the prospects of being nominated as the overall winner. “When I realised the calibre of men that were actually competing with me, I became a little bit doubtful that I would win, but still kept faith that if God brought me to it, he will take me through it,” he said. A proud father of three boys, Wallace (21), Gideon (16 ) and Jason (10), Wilson works at the Department of Correctional Services: Free State and Northern Cape and is the regional head.

The event is an initiative of the Department of Social Development and it is run in partnership with private stakeholders and non-profit organisations. Its objective is to acknowledge men who are preserving human dignity, alleviating poverty and who are advocates of positive transformation in their domains.

The public were invited to nominate a man in any of the ten categories – health, sports, education, community developer, youth developer, entrepreneurship, arts and culture, leadership, science and technology and a man of the year.
