Blankets given to say ‘thank you’

Parents and grandparents must be looked after, as they are the pride of their various communities and the nation at large.

This was the message from Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma during her short visit to hand over blankets to the elderly at the Gaasca old age home in Galeshewe on Friday (14/07).

“In our culture, you cannot leave somebody who is too old and abandon him,” Dlamini-Zuma said.

The visit was ahead of her public lecture on the Freedom Charter held at the Mayibuye Centre the following day.

“You can see whether a country cares or not by the manner in which it treats its children and by the way it treats its senior citizens,” she said during the handover.

She said the visit was also part of an effort to say thank you to senior citizens for the role they played in the fight for liberation and creating a better life for South Africans.

“Every generation creates a better life for the next generation. It is because of you that your children and grandchildren enjoy what they have today.

“That is why we are here: just to say thank you.”
