Board to attract investors

All eyes are on the newly appointed board of the Northern Cape Economic Development, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (NCEDA) to provide an investor-friendly business environment in the province.

The board aims to attract foreign and domestic investment, and creates employment opportunities.

The eight board members were announced on Wednesday, 7 February, by Mac Jack, Northern Cape MEC for Finance and Economic Development and Tourism.

They will serve for a term of five years. Positive response was reportedly received with regards to the call for member nominations.

A R1,9 billion Noupoort windfarm investment project in the Colesberg area is already on the board’s to-do list, with the focus being on job creation, particularly for the youth.

More than 200 people from the Umsobomvu Municipality are set to benefit.

Jack said that the foundation had already been laid.

“We welcome the new board, which is expected to play a big role in the economic development of the Northern Cape.

“Investment attraction is key for the development of any country and the reduction of unemployment, thereby improving the livelihoods of our people,” said Jack.

Weighing the effectiveness of the previous three boards, Jack sang the praises of the one that had operated from 2010 until 2015, chaired by Thobela Dikeni.

“Unfortunately, the board appointed after 2015, with the term ending in 2017, never sat for any board meetings.

“This violates Section 16 of the Northern Cape Economic Development, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency Act 4 of 2008, which stipulates that the NCEDA board has to sit for at least four board meetings in a year.”

Jack reminded everyone that, in terms of the act, the board is appointed as the accounting authority for the entity.
