A TEENAGE boy died on Saturday afternoon (30/01) after falling off a precipice. A friend witnessed the incident, saying the boy’s feet slipped on the edge of a stone quarry.

Lethoko Joseph Ralethoko (16) fell approximately 40 m to his death at about 14:00 in the neighbourhood of Semphurwaneng in Botshabelo.

According to Lt.Col. Annelie Wrensch, police spokesperson, the exact circumstances surrounding Lethoko’s death are still being investigated.

It is alleged that Lethoko and a friend were walking along the edge of the stone quarry when he slipped and fell to his death. His friend immediately contacted the police and paramedics.

According to Werner Vermaak, spokesperson for ER24, Lethoko fell approximately 40 m. His body had to be retrieved with the help of the Mangaung fire brigade.

When paramedics arrived on the scene, he was lying in the stone quarry.

“Members of the fire brigade had to climb down the stone quarry to get to the boy and bring his body back up,” Vermaak said.

The paramedics declared Lethoko dead on the scene.

An inquest has been opened.
