The Thaba Nchu Regional Court has sentenced Mxolisi Mpata (37) to ten years’ imprisonment for attempted murder.

The court found the accused guilty of the attempted murder of Reginald Makokoe (33). Makokoe was stabbed with a knife several times in November last year.

Mpata received this sentence on 20 November after the trial which ended a year-long wait for justice for the victim.

Mpata had reportedly attacked the victim at a local tavern, where the victim was watching a football match with his friends.

The court heard that the accused had attacked the victim shortly after the tavern owner had reprimanded him for his violent conduct several times.

Sgt Martin Xuma, Selosesha police cluster spokesperson, says eyewitnesses testified that an unruly Mpata continued with his violent conduct and started cursing at everyone inside the tavern.

Xuma says the accused had brutally attacked Makokoe when the victim tried talking to him politely and requested him to stop behaving badly.

“The accused then took out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times in the upper body before fleeing the scene. The victim was treated for severe stabs wounds at the local hospital he was admitted to,” says Xuma.

Mpata was brought to book within 48 hours. He was arrested by Det.WO Sabata Mokatsanyane.
