The Brebner High School boys’ football side remains intact in the championship contest of the SAB League of the Mangaung Metro. The newcomers in the third-tier league secured a valuable point against seasoned opponents Lazio from Botshabelo in a league match played at Brebner’s sports ground on Saturday (02/11). The match was drawn 1 – 1. Brebner’s players have only themselves to blame after failing to convert scoring chances. After trailing at half time, Brebner fought gallantly to equalise, but was unable to score more goals to seal a victory.Lazio, however, seemed happy to return home with one point, which is crucial in surviving relegation at the end of the season. Lazio’s defence did an exceptional job of absorbing the pressure from their opponents. The result sees Brebner two points adrift current log-leader Pro-Mates and Mathaithai, who is in second position. The game was played in very hot weather conditions. Brebner therefore remains intact in the hotly contested SAB League stream of the Mangaung Metro, played under the auspices of the South African Football Association. After briefly topping the log, Brebner descended to its current fourth position following a narrow 2 – 1 loss to Mathaithai in a match played a week ago. This is the school team’s only loss in the competition featuring 16 clubs. Brebner has won five and drawn two of the eight official matches played thus far. The side is tied on 17 points with Knowledge Glen, which Brebner will face in a tough league match scheduled to take place at the Glen Agriculture College on Friday (08/11). Kick-off is scheduled for 18:00. Both sides eye the three maximum points to consolidate their respective positions on the log ladder and keep the pressure on cross-town rivals Pro-Mates and Mathaithai, both from Botshabelo. These two top-seeded clubs each boast 19 points. The weekend fixtures will see Pro-Mates take on Young Santos at 13:00, with Mathaithai tackling Arms United at 11:00. Both matches will be played in Botshabelo.
