Bullying highlighted this month

2019-07-17 06:01

Bullying is again placed under the spotlight in schools during July which is recognised as National Mental Illness Awareness Month.

It is estimated that around 41% of children in South African schools experience some sort of bullying during their school career.

Shouqat Mugjenker, Mental Health portfolio manager at Pharma Dynamics, said bullying in South Africa has far-reaching mental health effects, which many carry into adulthood.

Victims often suffer from low self-esteem, poor academic performance, depression and an increased risk for suicide, but very little is known about the long-term impact.
