Bus tragedy strikes SANDF

AT least 11 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) were killed in a bus accident in the Golden Gate National Park near the Basotho Cultural Village on Friday morning (19/08).

A total of 42 SANDF members were being transported in the bus at the time of the accident.

According to reports, they were attending a Women’s Month celebration at the Basotho Cultural Village.

All the members were from the Department of Defence’s Mobilisation Centre at De Brug outside Bloemfontein.

Apparently, nine members were declared dead at the scene of the accident.

One member died on the way to the hospital and another died upon arrival at the Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli Regional Hospital in Qwaqwa.

One of the victims was in a critical condition and was transported by helicopter to the Pelenomi Hospital in Bloemfontein.

Dr Seati Moloi of Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli told Express Eastern Free State that eight victims had fractures and have been transferred to the military hospital.

Some of the soldiers killed in the accident were Cpl Akhona Tshoni (30), L/Cpl Sharon Nosiphiwe Macala (27), L/Cpl Cheena Roberta Jonkers (30), Sgt Matseko Josephine Madimabe (26), L/Cpl Maditsietsi Constance Morotolo (26) and Pvt. Maserame Dorcas Molibeli (25).

The victims included a chaplain‚ Phumza Teledimo (37), and four civilians, Lesego Cynthia Rasethuntsha (25), Maria Jacobs (57), Alice Thakanyane Masilo (27) and Portia Palesa Ramabodu (26).
