African Lighting and Electrical Wholesalers are marking the milestone of 20 years of existence, since 1998.

It prides itself on being an Unashamedly Ethical, level-one Black Economic Empowerment (BB-BEE) company (100% black owned).

The company has grown to employ nine staff members, who service clients through satellite branches in the Eastern Cape, the Free State, Gauteng, the Western Cape and the Northern Cape. The head office is based in Bloemfontein. The company services clients nationally from the central warehouse.

The company specialises in LED, Energy-saving and Solar Energy Technology products. The product range includes infrared and ultra-violet lighting. The range covers the indoor, outdoor, commercial, industrial and architectural industries.

The 20th anniversary is an important milestone in the life of the founder, Nathan Pillay.

Dedication, coupled with the invaluable ten years’ experience working as a national sales manager for a lighting company in Johannesburg, has come in handy ensuring his company thrives.

“It started in July 1998 from our garage at home as a family business,” said Pillay, who is the general manager.

He discovered his entrepreneurial spirit during his family’s move to Bloemfontein.

“My wife and our three girls moved to Bloemfontein in 1996 to help with a new church plant (Fountainhead Church).

“The travelling got a bit much and the Lord made it possible to start this business with R1 000 in the bank.

“With only matric as a qualification, ten years of faithfulness in another man’s business; and God rewarded this faithfulness by entrusting us with our own business.

“Key for us is what the scriptures say in Matthew 6:33: Seek first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you.

“Our business is a ‘Kingdom Business’, which means we put Jesus first in everything.

“We are an Unashamedly Ethical run business. Our dream is to see God use our business to change the business culture to conduct business with high ethics based on strong Biblical values and in the fear of God.”

Attributes of this successful brand include business ethics and support of employees, who are the “face” and “heart” of the company.

“Our underlying policy is: ‘service excellence, top-quality products, strong relationships and fair prices’.

“We remain eternally grateful for the support of our loyal customers and suppliers over the past 20 years. We are most grateful for God’s favour, both on our lives and business. We celebrate our values, which put God first in everything.

“Family is priority. We never pursue success at the expense of losing family values.

“We have taken it one day at a time and are so grateful to have ‘survived’ this long in such a tough economic climate,” said Pillay.
