It is all systems go as political parties gear up to take control of the seven wards that the ANC left vacant after axing its councillors earlier this month.

The ANC in the Northern Cape is on the other hand accused of putting the cart before the horse by announcing registration for by-elections instead of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

Although announcements have been made on the dates of the by-elections, the expelled councillors claim to not have received any formal notification of their expulsion from the IEC yet.

According to ANC posters, registration is set to happen on Saturday (08/12) and Sunday (09/12) for the by-elections that are expected to take place at a date to be announced in February 2019.

The affected wards are: 9, 11, 12, 13, 16, 19 and 22. At least nine ANC councillors were expelled from the ANC for voting with the DA to oust Sol Plaatje Mayor Mangaliso Matika earlier this year.

An acting mayor, who was referred to as the people’s choice, Pule Tabane, was sworn in twice during this period, until the ANC’s choice, Patric Mabilo, was eventually sworn in on 25 November.

The ANC, through its provincial secretary, Deshi Ngxanga, boasted about its victory of winning the appeal for the expulsion of the 11 councillors in the Kimberley High Court, where it announced the expectations for the defeated councillors to repay the R1,4 million in legal costs incurred in the court battle.

The ANC is still adamant that it will reclaim the affected wards in which the by-elections will be held.

Several members of the Sol Plaatje Community Forum has volunteered to assist the councillors in raising funds to pay the legal costs due to their role in supporting the people’s rights towards fighting corruption in the Sol Plaatje Municipality.
