Campaign to help youth in Jacobsdal

2018-06-27 06:00

Two energetic youths from Jacobsdal, Wendy Metsimetsi and Vuisile Sebusang, have been included in the 18+ Be the Mentor campaign.

The project, an initiative of the South African Breweries (SAB), educates the youth about alcohol abuse.

Metsimetsi and Sebusang have been appointed as local area managers for Jacobsdal.

Their appointment, which was done early in May, followed the completion of training.

The campaign aims to encourage young adults to be the mentor they wish they had, and to help teens make positive life choices, including staying away from alcohol.

Metsimetsi and Sebusang are two of the 500 mentors appointed countrywide to drive a community awareness campaign to educate the youth, as well as teenagers. This is envisaged to reach at least 1 000 teenagers.

The pair was appointed based on their individual background in educational progammes.

Throughout her school career, Metsimetsi was involved in educational programmes such as the Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Programme.

This inspired her to join the SAB 18+ Campaign, as it focusses on the issue “in a broader spectrum”.

“My community is faced with the challenge of teenagers drinking alcohol, and I enjoy playing a part in creating a change in Jacobsdal,” Metsimetsi said.

Sebusang said he had joined the programme in the hope of making a difference in his community.

“I want to motivate my community to become better people and, more importantly, motivate the youth to focus on their education instead of abusing alcohol,” Sebusang said.

The pair’s scope of work includes giving their mentees guidance and support, as well as to help solve problems.

The implementation of the 18+ Campaign in Jacobsdal followed findings that drug addiction, alcohol abuse and peer pressure were issues teenagers face.
