Celtic hoping to reach vital 35-point threshold

2018-02-21 06:02

Pressure is mounting for Bloemfontein Celtic to reach the threshold of 35 points, guaranteeing their safety from relegation and qualifying them for the MTN 8 Cup.

Phunya Sele Sele have descended from the top five to the bottom half of the log due to inconsistency.

The loss of firepower saw Celtic salvaging just five points in the six league games played since the start of 2018. They managed this after beating Lamontville Golden Arrows by 2 – 1 and playing to a 1 – 1 draw against Cape Town City in Bloemfontein, as well as drawing 0 – 0 against AmaZulu.

Celtic are yet to win after the victory over Arrows on their home turf of the Dr R.P. Molemela Stadium.

Celtic lost crucial games against Bidvest Wits (1 – 0), Maritzburg United and SuperSport United, by 4 – 0 and by 4 – 2, respectively.

The poor run sees Veselin Jelusic’s charges among the eight clubs battling to reach the threshold of 35 points.

Celtic have 25 points, 6 wins and 7 draws after 20 league games.

They are under pressure to avoid a repeat of last season, when they finished in the relegation zone and failed to qualify for the MTN 8 Cup.

In their concerted effort to rekindle their firepower, they can hope to rise to the occasion in their intriguing league outing against archrivals Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday (24/02).

The two sides will face off in the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. They drew by 1 – 1 in the opening fixture of the first round of the league for 2017-’18 and are expected to unleash their best to attain their targets.

Chiefs are hoping to intensify their chances of winning the league, while Phunya Sele Sele are expected to pull out all the stops to achieve their target to reach the safety threshold of 35 points.

Chiefs, led by Steve Komphela, are chasing league glory and are four points adrift of the leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chiefs have 34 points and Sundowns 38 points.
