A SHORTER Klipspringer Lite 21 km trail run has been introduced by SANParks and the management of the Augrabies Falls National Park, who are the organisers of the eagerly-awaited inaugural Augrabies Falls Klipspringer Challenge (over approxi-mately 40 km) which takes place on Sunday, 1 May.

According to race organiser, Warren King, the decision was taken due to overwhelm-ing demand.

“Due to the overwhelming demand we received, together with the incredible support from local runners in Upington, Kakamas, Kuruman, Springbok, Pofadder, Prieska and Kimberley, we decided that we still had enough time to listen and add a fantastic 21 km shorter race. We are calling it the Augrabies Falls Klipspringer Lite,” said King.

King described the Klipspringer Lite as a truly spectacular, but properly challenging, introduction to the world of extreme desert trail running, giving runners a chance to taste the desert before graduating to the monster Klipspringer Challenge. The Lite route covers much of the same tough and technical terrain as the Challenge, without going down into the canyon itself.

Runners will be taken through the starkly beautiful Kalahari, along the rim of one of the world’s most dramatic granite gorges, over otherworldly moonscapes and through unforgiving soft sand.

They will be treated to the incomparable desert landscape, the unmistakable silhouettes of indigenous camelthorn and quiver trees and the unforgettable site of Africa’s legendary Orange River, as it cuts through golden granite cliffs on its way to the cold Atlantic Ocean.

This is trail running and nature at its most intense.

Entrants to the Klipspringer Lite can also look forward to receiving a great specially-designed race T-shirt from Anatomic.
