The protection of children against violence and the protection of their rights will take centre stage during Child Protection Week (CPW).

An initiative of the Department of Social Development, the awareness campaign will take place over nine days, from Sunday (28/05) to 5 June. The theme this year is “Let Us All Protect Children to Move South Africa Forward”.

Lerato Tlhapuletsa, the provincial departmental spokesperson, said the Free State will host the national CPW event with the host venue being Petrusburg, west of Bloemfontein. She said the national event will be jointly staged by the provincial and national Department of Social Development.

According to her, the Free State MEC for Social Development, Limakatso Mahasa, announced this town in the Xhariep region as the host earlier this year. Provincial campaigns are scheduled to run from Tuesday (30/05) to 5 June. Tlhapuletsa said members of the public are encouraged to wear a green ribbon: “A green ribbon symbolises life,” she said.

  • During the provincial campaign the department will focus on a number of challenges in the five regions of the Free State. These are: strengthening foster care services;) adoptions/inter-country adoptions to ensure the care of children;) the impact of substance abuse on unborn babies;) protecting the rights of children, including children with disabilities;) the importance of reporting child abuse, neglect and exploitation; and) promoting the importance of Early Childhood Development programmes.

Held annually, the awareness campaign was initiated in 1997, when the department and stakeholders rallied support to raise awareness and sensitise communities about child abuse, neglect and exploitation.
