ONE cannot miss the youthful energy of Claudine Benjamin (13) amongst her netball team during sports tournaments.

This enthusiastic goal-shooter is a learner at the Hopetown High School and a member of the u.14 netball team.

She made her mark in netball, which resulted in her being chosen to be part of the 20 girls’ team to represent her school and district during the upcoming Southern Tour in New Zealand.

She is more than willing to fulfill her dream.

However, she and her family struggle to raise the required amount of R38 000 to make it to New Zealand for the tour.

The tour will commence on 28 September and end on 8 October.

The Southern Tour consists of young sports participants from the Northern Cape and the Western Cape.

According to her coach and teacher, Rouchelle Basson, it is not by chance that Claudine was chosen to be part of the team.

It is solely through her hard work in the sport that she was chosen.

“She deserves this opportunity as she will make us all proud,” said the coach.

“I started spotting her talent this year when I took over the school netball team.

“She has really proven herself thus far,” said Basson.

Claudine’s unemployed mother, Ethere-sia, has sleepless nights. She does not know how she will be able to assist her daughter to raise enough funds before the end of September this year.

Mom Etheresia is concerned that Claudine, who was chosen along with three other girls from her school, will be left shattered if she misses the opportunity.

There is a possibility that she is the only one that will struggle to come up with the money.

“Given the fact that I am unemployed and that we live in such a poor community with little opportunities, we feel it is a blessing to the whole family that she was granted this opportunity in the first place,” she explained.

“I am praying day and night to receive just one phone call or a letter from one of the doors that I have knocked on for a sponsorship to hear that ‘she got the funding,” said the nervous mother.

To prove that she can depend on Claudine, Basson highlighted with pride that Claudine was one of the players who excelled by leading the team to greater heights during the Winnersday Tournament on Wednesday (18/05) in De Aar.

“We played against Gariep and won 9-6.”
