Clubs battle it out to gainpromotion

2018-06-20 06:01

Two football clubs, City Sharks and Morojaneng United, will have another attempt at gaining promotion to the SAB League during the Interstate Bus Lines Safa Promotion League play-offs.

To determine two clubs to be promoted to the third-tier league, the play-offs will take place at the Mmabana Stadium in Thaba Nchu on Saturday (23/06).

Saturday’s play-offs will see four instead of six clubs compete for two available spots in the SAB League, also run under the auspices of Safa.

The two towns Soutpan and Wepener are not represented after their league collapsed midway.

The league in the two towns were previously part of Lejweleputswa and Xhariep.

The two towns are now part of the Mangaung Metro and are yet to adapt to the administration since their incorporation.

Sharks from Thaba Nchu and United from Dewetsdorp were finalists in the 2016-’17 play-offs and the two teams fell by the wayside.

They now look to take advantage this time having qualified for the promotion play-offs.

United and Sharks will compete for promotion against Bloemfontein-based Bochabela Warriors and the winner of Botshabelo is yet to be decided by Safa’s dispute and resolution committee.

The association is expected this week to decide the Botshabelo duly winner between clubs Lynx and Black Urban, who are involved in a dispute.

Sharks and United qualified for this year’s promotion play-offs after winning their respective town streams of the IBL Safa Promotion League.

Their progress has given them a second chance to realise the dream to gain promotion to the third-tier division, the SAB League which features mainly 16 clubs.

The SAB League is the third highest in the country after the ABC Motsepe League.

United and Sharks lost the promotion battle to Botshabelo Roo Stars and Bloemfontein Action Spar who were promoted to the SAB League.

The two winning teams at the promotion play-offs will also receive incentives which include medals and cash.

The winner will receive R5 000, a trophy and a gold medal.

The runner-up will get R2 500 plus a silver medal.
