Four local football clubs of different divisions emerged victorious and were awarded with golden trophies at the Sol Plaatje Local Football Association’s (SPLFA) awards ceremony held at the Galeshewe Mayibuye Centre on Saturday, 24 November.

The Tswaragano All Stars FC team was crowned as the winner in the u.12 division, while the Galeshewe United FC team won the u.14 division.

Tshwaragano All Stars FC lifted the trophy for the u.16 division, and the u.18 division was topped by Bush Bucks FC.

Regional secretary of the South African Football Association (Safa) in the Frances Baard District, Winston Mondela, told the players to see the ceremony more as a celebration and steer clear of distractions over the festive season.

“Keep your minds occupied through helping out with chores at home. You must keep footballers’ good reputation alive, and be someone that society can look up to,” he said.

According to Mondela, SPLFA members were reaping what they sown, in terms of celebrating their hard work that they put in since the beginning of the season in February.

“By looking back and reflecting, it is evident that they have become better.

“It is like putting a child through school and expect them to pass at the end of the year. We monitored that and they did.”

The event got support from parents, fellow footballers, Sol Plaatje Masters League, Safa Regional and the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture who sponsored the trophies.

Mondela highlighted the need for the Local Football Association (LFA) to improve its performance through having their own offices.

He further called on members of the community to stop the culture of turning local soccer pitches into residential areas.

“Community members should stop erecting shacks on every open field that is meant to empower their children’s development in sports.

“Those pitches are used for sports and they are obstructing the development of LFA’s.”
