Combat poster destruction

2016-06-08 06:00

WE are at the point where our country is facing the most important and crucial period wherein citizens will practise their democratic rights in the upcoming local government elections.

Before the elections can be smooth and characterised by tolerance, we need to take a serious responsibility of teaching our own constituencies about the Electoral Code of Conduct, and not only on voting day.

Some wards within the Dihlabeng Local Municipality have already suffered the violation of the right to be associated politically and to take part in a campaign.

Posters of the opposition have been destroyed in Wards 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 and 19.

These malpractices or misconducts from unknown individuals take place at night.

The democratic principle is undermined by thugs, mafias or revisionists using desperate people to break the law.

Our authorities or law enforcement agencies even find themselves in difficult positions to make arrests of the suspects.

The big question about the destroying of political posters remains whether or not these are personal hatred of parties or individuals contesting the elections.

There is a need for safety clusters to discuss strategies on combating the destruction of posters.

Let the community also help to end fascism against democracy until the big day in August.
