The community of the surrounding areas in which Kumba Iron Ore, a business unit of Anglo American, operates got the opportunity of celebrating Heritage Day in style, thanks to the mining company.

This year, the company decided to change things a bit and invited the community to reclaim, restore and celebrate the countie’s living heritage at the Postmasburg showgrounds.

According to the statement from the mine, a variety of activities were hosted, including the VW Car Show and Shine competition, and jumping castles were provided for the kids.

Entertainment was also provided by a local singing group, Soul Music Sensations (SMS), as well as Rhema Varrie from Idols.

According to Nikki Wetzlar from Anglo American, Heritage Day, also known as National Braai Day, was declared a public holiday. Before that, the South African parliament had omitted Shaka Day, which led the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) to object.

“A compromise was reached, however, when it was decided to create a day where all South Africans could observe and celebrate their diverse cultural heritage,” elaborated Wetzlar.
