The management of the South African Police Services (SAPS) in the Northern Cape has noted and welcomed the sentence of a student constable convicted of robbing businesses in the province.

Kabelo Godffrey Setlhabi (30) was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Taung Regional Court.

Setlhabi, who had been a student constable in the SAPS, was sentenced on Tuesday, 18 October, for robbing two businesses.

The SAPS expressed the hope that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to other criminals.

Furthermore, the SAPS hoped that the sentence would make it very clear that no one was above the law, regardless of where they were employed.

According to police spokesperson, Lt.Col. Dimakatso Mooi, Setlhabi was stationed at the Delareyville Police Station in the North West Pro-vince.

“The robberies happened in February 2012 at Pampierstad and at the Sek-hing Village,” Mooi said.

Setlhabi was reported to have used a firearm in both incidents and was arrested after an intense investigation.
