A SPECIAL council meeting saw the newly-elected councillor, Maria Kalman, sworn in on Friday, 27 May, in the Phokwane Local Municipality.

The appointment of Kalman follows an article published in the Express Northern Cape of Wednesday, 25 May, wherein ANC members of Phokwane raised grievances around her abrupt appearance on the candidate list.

They were already questioning her position as the replacement to the late Speaker Dieketseng Moeketsi, who passed away earlier in April.

According to the ward members, Moeketsi was on top of the candidate list and was therefore earmarked to become the mayor of the Phokwane Local Municipality.

The ANC head office has since dismissed the allegations and assured that it did not mean that Kalman would automatically be the mayor.

In a statement confirming the appointment, Kgalalelo Letshabo, the communication officer of Phokwane, said Kalman was the replacement for the vacant seat of the late Moeketsi.

Welcoming and wishing her all the best on her appointment, Letshabo said that Kalman was a manager in the political office and prior to that she had worked as team leader on roads and storm water.

She is reportedly also a former Samwu shop steward.
