QWAQWA. – Malefu Vilakazi was re-elected as the executive mayor of the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality during the first sitting of the fourth council.

It was held in Qwaqwa on Friday (19/08), following the local government election on 3 August.

Vilakazi, who is the regional treasurer of the ANC in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District, was re-elected unopposed.

Mbothoma Maduna, who is the regional chairperson of the ANC in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District, was re-elected as the speaker of the same municipality.

He was also re-elected unopposed.

Both Vilakazi and Maduna occupied the same positions in the previous term of the council.

The two councillors pledged to work hard towards ensuring that the district municipality maintains its good record of clean governance.

The municipality attained a clean audit in the financial year 2014-’15.

It is the first municipality in the Free State to attain such a record.

The selection of Vilakazi and Maduna took place after all district municipality councillors were sworn in by acting chief magistrate Jennifer Moalusi.

There are six parties represented in the district municipality.

They are the ANC, the DA, the Dikwan-kwetla Party of South Africa, the Economic Freedom Fighters, the African Independent Congress and the Congress of the People.

All the parties congratulated Vilakazi and Maduna and promised to support them.

Vikalazi said she was glad to be elected for the second term and added that they will make sure that they work for the people.
