Country to unite in prayer

2017-05-24 06:00

South Africa Pray, a nationwide initiative supported by concerned Christians, calls on citizens to unite in prayer from Thursday (25/05) until 4 June.

“The period is significant because of Ascension Day and Pentecost. Even though these religious festivals are not public holidays, it is still celebrated by millions of believers in South Africa,” said Rev. Jannie Pelser, initiator of South Africa Pray.

Pelser said various faith-based organisations, including the South African Council of Churches (SACC), and millions of concerned Christians supported the prayer initiative.

“Churches are encouraged to open their doors for people to unite in prayer. The SACC has also echoed this call to prayer.

“We live in turbulent and challenging times, and Christians have a vital role to play in times like these.

“The state of our nation compels us to join hands as we look to God for healing and restoration.

“Currently too many challenges are to be negotiated: corruption; crime and violence; poverty and unemployment; prejudice such as racism; drug abuse; as well as the disintegration of families, to name just a few.

“These issues are causing an inordinate amount of worry and stress to South Africans.”

The suggested time for prayer is from 12:00 to 14:00.

People are urged to initiate and facilitate prayer events at work, home, with friends, in the classroom and on the sports field, as well as at churches.
