A 21-year-old driver was rushed to hospital after crashing into a bridge along Kenilworth Road in the Kimberley industrial area on Saturday (08/04) at 16:00.

Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a call-out and found the man critically injured.

According to Chris Botha of Netcare 911, the driver of the vehicle had apparently ignored road signs indicating that the roadway was closed due to flooding.

He had apparently tried to cross the flooded area and crashed into the bridge.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the crumpled remains of the car, which had collided at a high speed into the bridge.

“The vehicle ramped onto a muddy embankment and its rear end was still in the water when the paramedics arrived.

“The driver was trapped in the wreckage,” Botha stated in a press release.

The paramedics worked ceaselessly on the scene, using rescue equipment to extricate the driver.

He was then stabilised and transported to hospital under the supervision of an advanced life support paramedic.
