Curvy finalists gear up for stage

The beauty pageant designed for curvy and shapely models, Miss and Mrs Plus Size is Me South Africa, proves to have the charm too.

Finalists from the Free State vying for the coveted title for unmarried women are already gearing up for the big stage for 2018, in an event held for the second year.

The nine finalists from the Free State were announced in November.

According to the initiator of the pageant, Mokone Chief Leeuw (chief executive officer), this beauty pageant for curvy women is gradually gaining popularity.

“It is attracting interest among candidates across South Africa. I have received enquiries from women in the neighbouring countries. For now, the focus is on South Africa.

“The pageant is giving women in this category the opportunity to showcase their talent and to embrace themselves as models having the same qualities as the opposite.

“It is also opening doors for curvy women in the modelling industry,” says Leeuw.

This year’s final round, in which the top three will be crowned, is on 7 April. The finalists from the Free State will compete among the top 23 finalists from across South Africa.

“Miss Plus Size is Me South Africa is a brand that promotes and celebrates the selflessness and beauty of curvy women.

“The pageant is about self-worth and appreciation.

“As much as slender or thin, fat or curvy should be part of the celebration of who we are,” says Leeuw.

A Bloemfontein-based model representing the Free State, Boitumelo Seduku, scooped the 2017 title of Miss Plus Size is Me South Africa after strutting her stuff to impress the panel of judges who unanimously chose her as the deserving recipient of the title.

Zanele Chaka from the North West Province and Babalwa ka Mabhoza from Gauteng were chosen as the first and second princesses.

Last year’s finalists were from the Free State, Mpumalanga, the North West Province, Gauteng, Limpopo and the Eastern Cape.
