Dam levels remain critically low

Residents in the greater Mangaung Metro Municipality are encouraged to continue utilising water wisely as water levels remain critical.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in the Free State, recent rainfall did not improve water levels in the various dams supplying water.

Dam levels in the Free State are currently sitting at 73,6% and dropping weekly.

According to dam level reports issued by the DWS, water supply systems in Bloemfontein are currently sitting at 36,3%.

The Rustfontein and Groothoek dams are reportedly at their lowest, 31,5% and 15,4%, respectively.

Recent light rainfall in the Free State was reportedly lower than 30%.

The department said it did not improve water levels in the dams in general.

Severe drought is being blamed for all water problems across the province and South Africa.

Due to severity of water, level three water restrictions remain in the greater Mangaung, the department stated.

Residents who have swimming pools are requested to comply with restrictions in place currently.

Residents should also not water grass.
