Dance festival promotes growth

2018-10-17 06:03

“This year’s Dance Pages Festival was very successful, showing incredible growth and a greater exposure of local talent and an improvement in 2019. as compared to the previous years..”

This is according to Letlhogonolo Lucky Nche, manager of the Mayibuye Dance Academy in Kimberley.

This year’s festival, which was hosted in Kimberley from 26 to 28 September, showcased new talent from two accommodating two schools and three local community groups.

The participating schools were those of Floors High 2 and the Tshireleco High School, while members of the Ubuhle Cultural Group, the TVD Performing Arts Centre and the Kimberley Boys Dance Squad also showcased local talent.

This was the fifth time the festival was held.

Nche says the best move towards improving the festival was through hosting auditions.

He believes the auditions spiced up the show and drew larger crowds.

According to Nche, the students are showing extreme growth – to such an extent that they qualified to participate in the Mzansi Fela Festival that will be hosted in the State Theatre in Pretoria from 1 to 16 December.

“The group will perform on 12 December,” Nche said.

“At least eight of our dancers will get exposure to African countries.”

He applauds the festival for creating local employment opportunities in the arts industry.

“Of course, there is still room for growth in various fields, such as positions for like in this instance where groups and a school were commissioned, including other fields like stage managers, lighting technicians and crew members.”
