David faces Goliath

2017-03-08 06:05

Free State amateur football team Days FC is hoping to see the success of its giant-killing quest when they face off against Mbombela United in the Nedbank Cup last-32 knockout fixture.

The two teams campaigning in the different leagues will battle it out in the Griffons Stadium in Welkom on Sunday (12/03). Kick-off starts at 15:00.

The winner automatically secures itself a berth in the next stage, which will feature 16 teams that will continue their ambitious hunt for the glory of this lucrative championship.

Days originates from the Free State’s Goldfields town of Odendaalsrus. They hope to continue with their giant-killing act in Sunday’s intriguing cup outing.

The lower division outfit convincingly eliminated Hunters, who campaigned in the ABC Motsepe League, to secure a berth in the last-32 of the football tournament.

The provincial elimination match was played during November last year.

By virtue of winning the provincial final, Days represents the Free State this year and have made history by becoming the first-ever from the lower league of the SAB league to reach this stage of the prestigious football cup.

The minnows will create more history on Sunday if they knock out United, who eliminated Welkom-based side Sibanye Golden Stars in last year’s last-32 leg. The host Days is captained by ex-Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars midfielder Kleinbooi Taaibos, whose experience could be useful against the Mpumalanga-based side United, currently campaigning in the National First Division.
