Department gears up to reward women

2017-07-12 06:01

The Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development is all set and ready for the annual Female Entrepreneur Awards 2017 that will be held in Kimberley in August.

This year, 87 female entrepreneur projects went through the adjudication process.

According to Phemelo Manankong, external communications officer, the visits to the female entrepreneur projects were to ascertain how well female entrepreneurs know their projects, both in livestock or crop farming.

“It was also to get first-hand information on their daily work at their farms,” Manankong added.

This competition continues to acknowledge the contribution of women, young women and women with disabilities in the sector with regard to food security, job creation, economic growth and poverty alleviation.

The John Taolo Gaetsewe District had 28 entries. However, it was left with only 11 female entrepreneurs, while the ZF Mgcawu District ended up with nine. The Namakwa District entered nine and ended up with five, while the Frances Baard District tops the list with 21 contenders.

Categories for this year include best female farmworker in the sector, best subsistence producer, top entrepreneur: smallholder, top entrepreneur: processing, top entrepreneur: export, top entrepreneur: commercial and the MEC special awards for youths and disabled.

At least 38 projects were axed throughout the province. Reasons for disqualifications varied from failure to make entity registration, entity registration in a spouse’s name, workers not registered with the Department of Labour and no SARS certificates.
