A Self-taught app developer from Botshabelo received a prestigious award at this year’s MTN Business App of the Year Awards ceremony.

Mbangiso Mabaso (28) excelled in this competition aimed at recognising local talent and innovations, which had attracted scores of entries.

He is one of 12 category winners, who were named at a function in Johannesburg on 27 October.

Mabaso received an accolade for the best innovative solution for his app, SI Realities, which allows students to conduct experiments in a virtual science lab that only exists on a smart device.

The app uses augmented reality to teach science to learners without access to real-life science labs.

Users first scan a small cube with the device’s camera.

The app overlays the cube with virtual science apparatus or experiments on the screen. Move the cube, and the virtual equipment move as well.

Mabaso explained that his innovation started out as a mobile game and pivoted to become a virtual science lab.

He said the public schools he attended (the Bolokehang Primary School and the Leratong Secondary School) never had science laboratories.

“It was very difficult to imagine science without a lab,” Mabaso said.

“It means a lot to be recognised for solving our circumstances.

“Clearly the future will be much better and provide access for all learners.”
