I am slowly losing my memory.

Have you ever put the dishcloth in the fridge?

Have you looked for your spectacles whilst you are still wearing them?

I have looked for the cellphone whilst I was talking on it and telling the other person that I am looking for the cellphone.

I have forgotten to fetch my grandchildren from the crèche and school. I have forgotten important appointments or to do things I promised to do.

My cousin has written down notes and pinned them to the fridge. These days you can set reminders on the cellphone.

I use alarms for all things – time to wake up, to fetch the granddaughter from school and more. These days I even have an alarm for “drink your pills”.

Therefore I was concerned and asked my doctor to refer me to someone who could test my memory. When I got there, they had a list of questions and sentences, which they tell you and later you had to remember.

Some of the questions were, “In which town are we?”, “What is the date?” and “What season is this?”

Questions that may seem stupid, but it seems that other people have lost their memory to the extent that they do not even remember what day it is.

Needless to say I passed the memory test.

So, now I was concerned why I forget if my memory was still good.

The doctor said it is because there are many windows open on your computer. You are multi-tasking and you overload your brain.

That was difficult to accept.

We women are always praised for multi-tasking.

You are cooking, assisting the child with homework, cleaning or ironing at the same time.

That is why you will burn the food. Even when you are supposed to sleep, you are trying to solve a work problem.

We lawyers, when we are sleeping, our brains are still solving a problem.

That is why when you wake up you are still tired because your mind is not switching off.

I always envy the children when they sleep.

My granddaughter sleeps for 12 hours without even turning.

My advice to you is to not worry. Do not try to multi-task, concentrate on one thing and complete it before commencing something else. I sometimes find myself walking, but also checking social media and messages on the cellphone.

I will be driving and talking on the phone using Bluetooth. When you are talking on the phone whilst driving, not all your attention is on the road. You are splitting your attention.

Let us not teach our children to multi-task. We eat whilst watching TV or reading the newspaper or are busy on social media. There is no problem with our memory. We should just close some channels in our brain and concentrate on one thing.

At least I have been reassured that I do not have amnesia and it is also not old age.
