A would-be rapist of an intern doctor at the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein remains in custody until his next appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court.

Vice Olivier (32) from Bronville is set to reappear in court on Friday (14/06). He briefly appeared in court on Friday (07/06), facing an attempted rape charge. This followed the alleged assault with an intention to rape a 24-year-old intern doctor at about 23:50 who was on night-duty at the hospital on Monday, 3 June.

Olivier reportedly attempted to rape the victim in the doctors’ rest rooms section. However, the female doctor fought him off and bit off a part of his tongue.

According to Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson of the department, the doctor who escaped the ordeal was not injured and was receiving counselling.

Mvambi said Olivier, who apparently did not show up for an appointment with a social worker earlier, received plastic surgery to his severely torn tongue.

Col. Thandi Mbambo, spokesperson of the police, said apart of the attempted rape case, they are also investigating the armed robbery of another female doctor at the same hospital.

This happened on Saturday (08/06) at about 05:00.

The armed robber who took the cellphone of the doctor is still on the run.

The police and the Department of Health have launched investigations into the incidents.
