The Pamoja Development Athletics Club, which mainly nurtures aspiring stars in Bloemfontein townships, has received a valuable boost in the form of equipment.

The Sports Trust handed over its donation on 27 January.

The equipment, which is for training in track and field events, includes a rope, shots (metal balls for the shot put), two rubber discs (for the discus item) and two sets of relay batons.

Leonard Jingose, the club’s coach, says the donation will ensure the holistic development of athletes competing in both track and field events.

“Most people think of athletics as only track events and running, while in fact it also involves field events, such as the hammer throw and the discus. Field events are for athletes who do not have running talent, yet are capable and have talent in field competitions,” Jingose explains.

He says he believes the donated equipment will go a long way in nurturing future athletes and that it would help them excel in both track and field events.

“We are on a mission to introduce aspiring young athletes, aged from eight to 15, to track and field activities, which are non-existent in township schools. Our dream is to have athletes from township schools competing in the long jump, shot put, discus and the javelin items at the Free State championship.”

While the club needs more equipment, Jingose expressed appreciation to the donor for this gesture of goodwill.

“The club does not have any financial sponsor and the donation is a boost in our mission to develop athletes. This will assist in improving their skills to achieve their full potential.

“We are appealing to the community at large and to parents, as well as teachers, to be part of this community sport initiative supported by Athletics Free State to further the development of future stars,” says Jingose.

  • The club’s Schools Athletics Development League is scheduled to start on 14 March. Local schools interested in taking part are advised to send their details to pamojaac@gmail.com.
