WHEN he picks up a pencil, amazing things happen.

Mbulelo Monnapula, a gr. 10 learner of the Sehunelo Secondary School in Bloemfontein, draws amazingly life-like portraits of people.

The 17-year-old artist, who was born in Mafikeng and grew up in Viljoenskroon, told Express that he fell in love with art in 2008.

“At primary school I used to entertain my buddies with my paintings. I was always drawing at home to stay off the streets and away from trouble. However, I really never took painting seriously until I moved to Bloemfontein two years ago,” said Mbulelo.

“When I arrived in the city I met a lot of experienced artists and learned new skills from them. That’s when I realised I had potential for drawing. I’ve never looked back since then.”

People bring photos to Mbulelo and, for a reasonable amount of money, he makes a beautiful sketch of the person in the picture.

“I only do drawings when I don’t have any school work to do, as well as during holidays. I try to focus on my school work as much as possible, because education comes first. I need to get an education so that I can be a better person in the future.”

Mbulelo believes everyone is born with nothing and they have to work to find their special talent.

“Once you find your special skill, you will be able to make money to feed your family. Folding your arms and waiting for the government to create a job for you is not an option – we must all find out what we are capable of and do that in order to survive.”

This talented young artist does not have any plans to study art after finishing his high school education. Instead, he wants to study towards a qualification in film directing.

Mbulelo charges R450 (A1), R300 (A2) and R180 (A3) to do a portrait.
