Roy Jankielsohn, DA member of the Free State Legislature, has welcomed the R870 839 499,53 for disaster drought relief that has been allocated through the Provincial Gazette (No. 101, 24 January 2020). This is from various provincial and national government departments. “This is substantially more than the amount of R622 645 681 that was initially requested by municipalities,” said Jankielsohn. “It is clear that the timing of this announcement is linked to the current protests over serious water scarcity in the Maluti-a-Phofung (MaP) Municipality. “Initially, MaP requested R220 053 922 for disaster drought relief. It may be presumed that the additional amount could be allocated towards mitigating the serious lack of adequate and safe water in that area. “The allegations of misuse of previously allocated funds must be thoroughly investigated,” said Jankielsohn.
