MORE than eight black bags filled with marijuana, as well as 125 drug tablets, presumably Mandrax, were confiscated by AfriForum’s Kuruman neighbourhood watch two weeks ago on Saturday (20/02).

The operation, which saw a drug trafficking transaction thwarted, was done in collaboration with NKS Security Services in Kuruman.

According to a statement by Wico Swanepoel, AfriForum’s provincial coordinator for the Northern Cape, they received information from a member of the neighbourhood watch after coming across the marijuana and tablets.

“The neighbourhood watch reacted immediately and subsequently managed to hand over the marijuana and tablets to the SAPS with the help of NKS. However, the owners of the drugs have not yet been tracked down.

“We are aware of the fact that drug trafficking is a crisis countrywide and the discovery of these drugs come as a big victory for the community of Kuruman,” he stated.

Swanepoel also highlighted how drug related offences are evil deeds and have increased enormously.

“It is also a big threat to our children,” he continued.

Gonda Louw, AfriForum’s local coordinator for Kuruman, further pointed out that the increase in crime is also affected by the current staff reductions in the area and high level of unemployment.

“It is thus important that the community becomes actively involved with the neighbourhood watch,” said Louw.

AfriForum encourages members of the community to join hands with AfriForum’s Kuruman neighbourhood watch in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking. To support their motto of “Your safety is a priority for AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches”, members of the community are urged to SMS the word Buurtwag to 32532. An SMS costs R1.
