The supercharged ABC Motsepe League fixture between Bloemfontein Young Tigers and Super Eagles has the potential to provide an answer to the destination of the championship.

A victory for Eagles would see them tighten their grip and retain their five- and six-point lead over the second-placed Bubchu United and third-placed Mangaung Unite and fourth-placed Harmony, who are both tied at 43 points.

A victory for Tigers will see them claw their way back into the threshold of 40 points – which is currently the benchmark for clubs with potential to lift the championship trophy.

Eagles (49 points) and Tigers (39 points) will battle it out at the Clive Solomon Stadium on Saturday (18/03). Kick-off is scheduled for 13:00.

This intriguing encounter is a must-win for both sides to intensify their prospects to clinch this year’s Free State stream of the ABC Motsepe League.

The provincial championship winner automatically qualifies for the national promotion play-offs to be staged later this year.

Tigers are yet to win after five matches, which include the three derbies they lost.

Their best results after the five matches played were a 1-1 draw against Dikwena United and a 0-0 draw against Harmony.

Tigers are aiming to turn around their own misfortune at the expense of Eagles.

Eagles have been unstoppable, having overcome title contenders Bubchu and Harmony at the top of the table clashes.

The Bethlehem-based outfit’s emphatic wins saw them break even further away from other title challengers.

They beat Bubchu United by 3-2 and Dikwena, 0-1, respectively.

The Eagles goal-scorer Thapelo Selepe has been instrumental in scoring vital goals to ensure that his team remains intact in the championship race.

To plot Eagles’ defeat, Tigers will rely on prolific striker Justice Makoko in Saturday’s top of the table encounter.

An unfavourable result for Eagles will see the five-point lead reduced to a two- and three-point lead.

  • This will favour their rivals Bubchu, Mangaung and Harmony. Mangaung will face off against the Central University of Technology (CUT) in a crucial derby on Saturday (18/03) at the CUT Sports Complex. Kick-off is set for 15:00.

CUT is gunning for a win after two wins in derbies over Bubchu and Tigers.

  • CUT, who is not in the championship contest, derailed the prospects of winning for rivals Bubchu and Tigers when beating them in recent fixtures. Bubchu will host a relegation-threatened Dla2 FC at the Clive Solomon Stadium on Saturday. Kick-off is at 15:00.

All teams have seven matches to play before finishing the league (22 points), including this weekend’s eight matches (24 points).
