Eastern FS gets new paper

2016-10-05 06:00

MEDIA 24 is consolidating its local newspapers in the Eastern Free State to improve market penetration and ensure a better service to advertisers and readers in the area. The three Eastern Free State papers in the Central Local Newspapers (SPK) group of Media 24 will be replaced by a single new entrant in the market.

From 1 November, the titles Vrystaat and Maluti, both covering specific focus areas in the region, will be substituted by a new local paper, Vrystaat Nuus/News.

The paper, a free sheet, will be published from Bethlehem on Wednesdays and will be distributed from house to house in neighbourhoods in Bethlehem, Senekal, Reitz and Ficksburg, as well as at certain hotspots like agricultural businesses.

The paper will target readers of LSM 5 to 10 in these towns and will have stories in both Afrikaans and English.

The company also announced that, owing to challenging market conditions, Express Eastern Free State is to be closed down at the end of October.

Gert Coetzee, editor of Volksblad and editorial head of SPK, envisages that the new Vrystaat Nuus/News will meet with the needs of readers and the market in this particular area.

“Strong local news, human interest and community involvement will remain the mainstay,” he says.

Jeannine van Zyl, general manager of News Central, says Media 24’s newspapers have always been very well received by the Eastern Free State community.

“This product will have a much bigger reach, serving our readers and advertisers better than before.”
