FICKSBURG. – The Setsoto Local Municipality and the Departments of Labour and Public Works have been given seven days by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to respond to demands made in memorandums that was handed to them on Thursday (12/11). The seven days will end on Tuesday (24/11).

About 120 members of the EFF marched to the said departments and municipality to hand over their memorandums. They made it clear that they would paint Ficksburg red and will use violence if they do not get a response.

The marchers could not hand over their memorandum to the Public Works department as there was nobody to receive it. But Mohau Ntheli, the director of community services and Zolile Gwiliza, the acting manager of the Ficksburg Department of Labour, received the municipality and labour memorandums respectively.

Shadrack Liphoko, the EFF Thabo Mofutsanyana regional chairperson, said they were disappointed that Public Works did not send anyone to accept the memorandum. He said they were going to fax the copy to the department and hope to get a response by Tuesday.

The EFF is unhappy with what they claim to be the department of Public Works’ refusal to make a building that is currently being used as a tourism centre, available for a Technical and Vocational Education and Training college (TVET). In the memorandum they demand that the services of the tourism centre be halted.

“After seven days we will send out leaders to get the answers. We are going to search for the contact numbers of Seipati Lebusa, organiser of the Cherry festival. If we don’t get her, we will go straight to her house,” he said.

“If we don’t get positive responses, this municipality will be too small. I am the chairperson and I will make sure that we come in numbers,” he said.

In their memorandum to the municipality, the EFF have demanded the municipality to stop employing general workers from outside the municipality’s boundaries. They have also instructed the municipality to stop outsourcing the services.

“We demand quality service delivery with immediate effect. Councillors should stop to be labour brokers,” the memorandum reads. The memorandum submitted to labour only had a few points on it, amongst them the investigation of a labour issue at a chain store.
